Alternative Music, or Alternative Rock as it is better recognized, is a continuously growing genre that takes in an immense collection of musical styles, even though it took shape during the 1980s, with its roots in the punk bands. The main categories of Alternative Music can be recognized as American and British Alternative, Ska, Hardcore and Punk, Goth and Industrial, Indie and Lo-Fi, and New Wave and Post Funk. These categories are further separated into more concise genres, such as freak folk, shoegaze, riot grrl, math rock, emo, and grunge. However, all these diverse forms of Alternative Music have one thing in common, that is, as defined by its name, their music is very dissimilar from the usual music genres, such as blues, rap, or classic rock, thus, Alternative Music cannot be simply placed among these.
