A question for people who like Emo music

I will try to keep this as civil as possible as I dont want to start any unneeded flaming.

I started this thread because I have a question I really want answered but I dont hang out with emo people so I can never actually ask it. My question is, Do you guys listen to Emo music because you guys like the tunes and the style of music, or do you guys listen to it because you relate to the lyrics and the messages?

The reason why I ask this is because I find it incredibly hard to believe that anyone can wholeheartedly relate to most of the lyrics these Emo bands write. I mean, take this song for example. Im not sure if you guys know it, but its called "Welcome To My Life" by Simple Plan:

Do you ever feel like breaking down?
Do you ever feel out of place?
Like somehow you just don't belong
And no one understands you
Do you ever wanna run away?
Do you lock yourself in your room?
With the radio on turned up so loud
That no one hears you screaming

No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels all right
You don't know what it's like
To be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life

Do you wanna be somebody else?
Are you sick of feeling so left out?
Are you desperate to find something more?
Before your life is over
Are you stuck inside a world you hate?
Are you sick of everyone around?
With their big fake smiles and stupid lies
While deep inside you're bleeding

No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels all right
You don't know what it's like
To be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life

No one ever lied straight to your face
And no one ever stabbed you in the back
You might think I'm happy but I'm not gonna be okay
Everybody always gave you what you wanted
You never had to work it was always there
You don't know what it's like, what it's like

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like (what it's like)

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life
Welcome to my life
Welcome to my life

See, I have a huge problem with the fact that there might be people out there who relate to this song and others that are similar to it. How can someone possibly believe that no one else understands what its like to have a problem or run into serious conflict in their life? Do they somehow believe that their problem is bigger or more important than other peoples? Is this meant only for people who are diagnosed with depression or is it just me?

Seriously, I am not trying to flame. I actually want to know people's justification for listening to this music. If it is merely to listen to a catchy tune, ignore my questions. If you only listen to these songs when you feel especially shitty, then I can understand that I guess. If you relate to these lyrics all the time, please please please respond. Thanks for your time.

First off I don't think simple plan is emo. .

Anyway to answer your question, I only really listen/relate to emo lyrics when I'm having a hellabad day or my depression is setting in (yea...like legit...chemical imbalance depression), other than that if I'm listening to emo it's because of the tunes.

Personally, I call them pop punk, but I don't listen to them much so I don't know all that well. But what I have heard didn't seem very emo.

well just to start off, I definitely wouldnt ever consider simple plan emo. most of the bands that I like are bands that most people would consider "emo". personally, I do like the music, I dont care how simple some people call it, its catchy and I enjoy it. but I do also pay a lot of attention to the lyrics, and its not that I can relate to every single song, in general I'm a very happy person who leads a good life, but I appreciate how brutally honest bands like bright eyes and the get up kids are. I cant relate to most of the lyrics but it helps me understand where these people are coming from and how they feel. plus, when I do have a shitty day or something its like, I know that I'm not alone, I know that there are other people out there who feel just as shitty as I do and they understand. its not that these singers/writers think that they are the only ones out there who are sad, its exactly the opposite, its reaching out to everyone who's ever felt (probably mistakenly) that their life would never be the same or that they would never be happy again. that simple plan song is just a piece of shit that gives true passionate "emo" a bad name. fuck simple plan.

same i wouldnt call Simple plan emo, i've been called emo, i'm not i'm more punk-goth, with a classy, 50's-70's touch to it... with edge... i listen to the so called emo bands like MCR, if people only looked up on it more, the used seem emo, but there not, they hate being called emo, the true meaning of emo is just a genre : emotional rock' and basically if you look at any song in this whole wide world, you will find at least one line of a song that can relate to you in some way, i've sure found stuff like in the simple plan song to relate to me, there are days were you are fed up with the world and other days you fly so high in the sky, i basically listen to more "EMO" music than anything else.. but i listen ot everything in that scene, Black metal, Gore, Thrash, Heavy Nu metal etc... i hate it when people call me emo and have a stereo type they all slash there writs, its stupid......
