Hi there music fans

I'm doing a reasearch paper on emo culture and social awareness and could really use some decent feedback from people actively involved in the scene.

So, I've got a little set of questions for you to help me with my dissertation.

The premise is "people are attracted to emo through a heightened sense of danger in society"

Here we go:

1). Do you listen to emo?

2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s?

3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel?

4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why.

5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative?

6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only)

Feel free to write as much or as little as you like.

Thank you in advance for your help

Kind Regards
Ric Lean

Stupid, but I have nothing better to do right now and I need a distraction

1). Do you listen to emo?

Not so much any more, but I used to listen to what could be considered the "new" emo (The Used, Funeral For A Friend, Armor For Sleep, etc).

2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s?

I knew it started in the 80's but was unaware of the D.C. fact.

3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel?

I don't see how these are linked at all, but I will answer any way. (Whenever I refer to "we" or "us" I mean the United States) It upsets me that a nation such as the US could be considered so technoligically advanced and great and all that other horse crap and yet so relient on violence to solve a problem. That is part of the problem in itself, they pissed us off and we go over and kill them, which in turn makes more people angry that we think we're the "watch dogs of the world" and then they want to bomb the US more. We have the right idea, we're just doing it backwards. If we dropped food and financial aid and doctors and teachers into their country instead of bombs and soldiers, we would have alot more success in changing their minds about us "infedels". Terrorists hate us because of our capitalist, money money, give me now way of life, and they show us as evil to whatever host country they happen to be in and they gain support. If you start dropping food and money and people to try and cure disease into that country then who in their right mind is going to support the terrorist saying that we're greedy pigs. "They are swine. American dogs!" "Yea, well...I mean...they're dogs and all but they just fed my family and now they're showing me how to grow my own food so I can save the money I do make" "Oh...well...uh...fuck".

4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in?

No, because I'm surrounded by ignorance. I'm offended that the man selected to lead the "greatest country in the world" couldn't think of a simple strategy that basically is: take the money that you're spending on making bombs, make some sandwhiches and send it over to the starving, poor masses. And I'm not saying we should carry them, we should be in there teaching them and such while we help them out.

They have a different point of view, they don't like us, they attack us. We could retaliate and start the cycle again, or we could help them out. Love thy enemy.

5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative?

The "emo" culture is a joke where I live; a life style should not be based off of a music genre.

6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only)

You may call me Inferno. 17

Seems Intriguing

1). Do you listen to emo?

Not really, depends on the classifcations. People claim that The Smiths and Husker Du are emo, and I enjoy them.

2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s?

I do. Some of the bands labeled as emo back then I don't agree with. But any "emo" I listen to does some from this era.

3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel?

I guess its generally sad. I feel the same way about the war in Iraq as I do about all the other wars taking place on this planet

4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why.

I do. I am more worried about getting my wallet stolen then getting bombed. I understand the need for security, but I am not going to waste my life away worrying.

5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative?

Negative, the emo culture is essentially for sheep who need something to do cause they have nothing else to do.

6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only)

18/Male/Chop/Canada

P.S. This seems like one fake survey, I shall keep watching it.

1). Do you listen to emo?
I've grown to think that the word emo is bullshit, but most people would consider what I listen to emo.
2). Do you know about emo's origins in Washington, D.C. way back in the 80s?
Yes. Emo was pionered mainly by a band called Rites of Spring, a band hugely influenced by minor threat (the singher, guy picciotto later went on to form fugazi with ian mackaye). Rites of Spring were a hardcore band, but they began to make their lyrics and meanings much more personal and introspective which was unusal for the dc hardcore scene. People started to call them emotional hardcore, or "emocore". Over the years emocore became just emo as the genre evolved, although the term emocore is still used.
3). How do the war in Iraq and acts of terroist violence make you feel?
I don't support the use of violence but I think that as far as terrorism goes America is getting whats been coming to us for years. We've been shitting on third world countries for years and now its finally coming back to us. As far as the war goes, I'm not going to say much, but I don't support it. I think conor oberst said it best in the bright eyes song "When The President Talks to God" :
When the president talks to god,
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our womens' rights,
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does god suggest an oil hike,
When the president talks to god?

check that song out, its good.
4). Do you feel safe in the world you live in? Explain why.
Yes. I'm more worried about getting my cell phone getting jacked at school than I am about getting killed by terrorists. what does that tell you about how secure I feel.

5). In a sentence, explain your feelings towards emo culture, postive or negative?
Although I don't believe there is such thing as emo culture, I believe what is generaly accepted as emo culture is a positive thing because its away for people to understand intense and confusing feelings and realize that they are not alone in hving them.
6). What's your age/gender/name? (for quotation purposes only)
15/male/andrew miller
