I need help writing grunge music! When ever i try to write riffs, they sound good clean but when i hit the distortion pedal it always sounds like metal. Can someone help!

uhm, grunge was always just sh!tty metal, so that doesnt suprise me.

First of all tune down your guitar to a dropped D and jam a bit, you'll find very sweet grunge riffs
