Haha, nice Steve.

I use one good mic, an okay mic, and a shitty mic. My talent, and a processor, hahah. Actually, I'm getting the processor for christmas, so that'll be good. For the weekend i've convert my basement to a studio. A have a drum kit, 2 basses, 2 guitars, and 4 amps set up and ready to go. Not to mention like a Kilometer in wires and cables. But honestly though, I'm not a fan of recording any other way then direct, i like it to be real, for now anyways. Thats the metal way of doing it . Nah, it's all about the live show!

I personally hate direct-input. In my opinion, at least 1/3 of any real tone comes from the amp, and more so if you have a tube amp. My preferred method of recording is using a tiny (currently my 3-watt) tube amp, cranking it until the frequency 'breaks', and mic-ing that. Also, thats how most professional recording is done...

Thats what i ment Jakejake, I mic my amps. But i don't use filters or boards or any of that fancy shit. I mic the amp, i play till its perfect, and thats it.

k heres my setup, and ill give a bit on it:

mics: i have a drum mic kit i bought for 100 bucks, 4 mics that do a pretty damn good job for the money, and an sm-57, basically a utility mic that every studio has, and im gonna get a few condensers too

mixer: a little 10 track behringer mixer, another 100 bucks, same situation, and it is like a pro-am sort of mixer

then i plug that into my computer via the m-audio audiophile 2496 sound card, which is apparently a damn good card

and for software i run acid pro 5, which is pretty easy to use and has some good midi stuff, and plus im used to it so i like it and i guess thats basically my studio. of course my walls are covered with egg cartons too.

and for a reference manual, i have: home recording for musicians for dummies. word bitches

long live el hefe.
