Review Thor Bass Mjolnir

Review by a visitor on 7.12.2005

I bought my beautiful Thor Bass off of eBay. Inullve had luck with it in the past with my Modulus, so I thought I might give this a go. I bought this bass about a month ago for $1675, and itnulls almost annoying how many people compliment me. Heh.

  Features

First off, the body shape is the coolest ever, but the only problem is that it hurts playing when younullre sitting down, and itnulls too heavy (12 lbs) when you stand, but Inullm not that big of a guy. Like I said, I get a lot of compliments, and Inullm not afraid to show it off. This bass SOUNDS excellent, too. The wood choice was supreme. Five knobs that are easy to use...it switches from active to passive, the pickups pan, a volume control, and a three band EQ. The mid pulls out for mid gain. Easy and effective. I mostly play with the neck pickup, and close to the fingerboard for the hollow upright sound, but when Inullm feeling Jaco-ey, then the back pickup is where itnulls at.

  Playability

With a little work, Inullll be able to play the bass like it should be played. The sustain is killer for a fretless. There isnnullt another bass that I would trade this for. Thatnulls a bold statement. True though. The action is adjustible, and there are a couple spots on the neck where it buzzes, so I keep it a little higher.

  Quality

His customer service is imaculate. Everything works. It is one of the best basses here at Berklee. Well...in my opinion. Inullve yet to play a better looking/sounding bass.

  Durability

It fell off my bed and still plays the same. I would imagine it could handle a lot more damage, though I wouldnnullt want to damage it in anyway. Hopefully it lasts through many years of hard playing. Inullm sure it will.

  Overall

This bass was better than I thought it would be. Inullm not just saying that because itnulls my bass. It seriously is a piece of artwork. If this guy continues making basses like this, Inullm sure my bass will be worth a lot of money some day. Killer.

This is a bass custom buildt by http://www.thorbass.com.
I ordered a five string fretless bass, custom built to my (perhaps unusual) specifications. The normal Mjolnir series is a semi-hollow body of typical electric bass thickness. But as an apartment dweller, I wanted a bass that could be practiced on acoustically, while still retaining the characteristics of an electric bass.
So I ordered a semi-hollow body bass, with twice the body depth of a normal instrument. In addition, I wanted sound slots on the front, to make it more audible when playing acoustically. These are not normally provided on the Mjolnir basses.
The Thor Bass shop was receptive to these changes. I talked with them about the wood types that were available, after which I was able (and encouraged) to make very specific requests for what woods I wanted for the laminations and widths, in the neck and body. Also I was able to specify my desired string separation at the nut and bridge, and what I wanted for a neck width at the nut and 24th position (end of fingerboard).

I wanted a three pickup bass, after exchanging emails with the Thor Bass shop we settled on Bartolini jazz series pups with the associated active Bart electronics. I also wanted knobs for vol / bass / mid / treble, and a way to switch between the pups, but was not entirely sure what controls would be needed for all that. Again, the Thor Bass shop helped with this decision and I ended up with an additional knob for panning across the pups, which are selected with a three way switch, and there is a switch to set the bridge pup out of phase from the others. The mid knob has a pull / push feature that changes the frequency of the mid control.
The construction process took several months. For a small additional fee I was able to get construction photos emailed, so I could see the construction process (very interesting).

  Playability

Acoustically, the bass is loud enough to practice on, although it is not as loud as an acoustic guitar body type bass. It has a nice singing voice that could probably be miked. But all I wanted was to practice acoustically so I haven?t tried miking it?.
Played thru my bass amp (Ampeg SVT-3 PRO) this bass has an incredible amount of fundamental sound and sustain, so much so that I usually run the bass knob at around 3.5 or 4. I?ve found I like to leave the out of phase switch on all the time, and use the pan control as a quick to vary the amount of phased sound. The bass sounds really nice, the sound can be sweet as a bird or can growl like a bear, depending on the control settings and the way I play it.

Being a technical kind of person, I was interested to see how well the Thor Bass shop did, with the measurements I gave them for lamination widths, neck widths, and string seperation. Everything was spot on or so close it I could not possibly complain. . I?m really impressed with both the craftsmanship and the customer service. If you want a well crafted hand made instrument, you should check these guys out. http://www.thorbass.com

  Durability

To date I have had no problems with durability. The Bass seems well built and I see no reason it shoud not last for many years.

  Overall

If I was to order another custom built double width bass, I might ask for the horns to be tapered in the front to back plane. Mostly because this would be prettier, it would show off the body lams better. In sound quality, this bass surpassed my expectations. I havennullt played either of my other basses since this one was delivered. The only limitations of this bass, were the ones I myself created when giving my specs to the manufacturer. Inullm always considering my next dream bass and what I would like it to be like. When I make up my mind on all that, and when I can afford it, the first place I will contact is these folks.
