Review Marshall JCM2000 DSL50 Valvehead

Review by a visitor on 20.1.2008

bought used thru craigslist (internet) paid $775......was looking to avoid the new price tag @ gtr.center of $1200! was seeking the coveted overdriven tube saturation @ low volume!

  Features

although quite a monster for tone ( clean, crunch & two overdrives) the very clean setting (for the 50 watt) needs to be @ 5 or above.however if nullcrunch is engaged a substantial level of volume is quickly attained. switching to overdrive & ultra-overdrive (ridiculous amounts of gain) are done either thru the front panel ala push switch or floor switch & produce excellent tube saturation (even at low volumes) however that said the EQ needs adjustment between the two channels (should actually have seperate EQ for both channels) each channel does have itnulls own reverb (a plus) & there is an effects loop for delay or slaving another amp.(a plus) Very rich classic marshall tones (at least three seperate identities) & 50 watts is quite powerful as long as you are not relying on clean tone as a base sound

  Playability

actually one of the better marshall amps. there are better sounds (at more money) but not many that are this versatile with the master volumes & channel switching it is quite satisfactory

  Quality

I own several vintage amps (twin reverb,pre-cbs bandmaster, ampeg V4) & this is right up there with producing classic tone from recordings that defined the eras as well as present day requirements.......like i said a bit noisy turned up but i use a noise gate to help solve this

  Durability

very well built & so far no problems (except slight hum developed in the reverb channels) excellent for live performance where extra gain is always needed.

  Overall

definitely a keeper. Very hard to find tube saturation at low volume but even at 2 or 3 this head delivers substantial over-drive........even marshalls clean tones are all their own......there is always room for improvement especially at todays prices........but this item makes those classic rock tones both affordable & attainable....i always played 100 watt amps for 30 years & this is the first 50 watter that keeps up! (run stereo thru a chorus pedal thru another smaller marshall (Mosfet) & i got a sound that is responsive & delicious.....
