Purchased my EJ200 from a batch of a half dozen guitars of different makes and models, that I pulled into the back room of my local Guitar Center.

Total cost with a case was around $600.00.

Of all the makes and models I had around me, this one had the biggest "bark" and was the easiest on the fingers.

Purchased on line for $429.00.

I was looking to purchase ONE perfect acoustic guitar. I own three Gibson electrics so I looked hard at the Gibson SJ200 as it had been tagged as "King of the flat tops". I went to a Gibson sponsered event in Nashville where they had their entire acoustic lineup available to play. That's were I fell in love with the JUMBO sound. I was also impressed with the bright sound created by Maple back and side construction. The only down side was the $3,600 price tag. At $3,600 I would be scared to take it out of the case much less out of the house!! Just for grins, I ordered the Epiphone ej 200ce on line to see how it felt and sounded. Much to my amazement, it felt and sounded very very good. It had the "bright" tone just like the Gibson. When plugged in, you don't loose much of the sound quality. I wish it had a built in tuner.

  Playability

As stated eariler, I was impressed with this axe right out of the box. It did buzz on one string on one note so I took it for a professional setup and have very happy ever since. He lowered the action just a bit and tweaked it ever so much. Nothing major, he just adjusted it for my personal taste.

Is this axe as good as the $3,600 Gibson, of course not. Is this the best acoustic in the world, NO. Would you see many artist on stage at a major venue playing this thing, probably not. BUT, for only $400 , it sounds DAMN GOOD, plays extremly well, and seeing how I doubt I will ever play a major venue, who cares if major artist aren't playing one.

  Durability

At only $400 or so, I am not afraid to take this axe out and about. As far as durability, what can I say? I'm not exactly going to try and drive nails with it but I wouldn't try that with any other acoustic either. I have taken it just about everywhere with no problems. However, I live by the rule that no acoustic insturment should be left in an enviornment that I wouldn't like to be in, so it has never been left in a 100+ temp vehicle or out in the rain or anything like that.

I wanted a GOOD, SOLID, GREAT SOUNDING acoustic axe that I wouldn't be afraid of taking anywhere and could play under any condition. This baby has fit the bill. At 43, I realize that I am never going to be a rock star, nor do I have any plans on moving to Nashville to strike it rich. Nor do I play serious enough to warrant paying nearly $4,000 for an acoustic. But for under $1,000 bucks, this guitar is the best I have seen and heard anywhere.

  Playability

I learned to play at 15 on a Gibson. Raising a family and getting an education took all my attention for 40 years. Lately I have had a strong desire to play again. I shoped for a new guitar for about a year. One night I just decided it's time. The Epiphone EJ200 was in my price range so I decided what the hell. I liked the looks and feel, and it had a nice tone. I took it home and strung it with Elixir Ultra light coated strings. I play a lot of barre chords and one string blues riffs. The action out of the box is very good and compares to Gibsons that I tried that sell for twice the price. I suspect that when I bring it to a luthier and have it set up, it will only improve.

I must admit when I purchased the guitar I thought it had a solid spruce top. I was amazed when I found out that it has a laminate. I have read a hundred times that solid tops sound better, but I got to tell you, I'm in love with the sound of this guitar. The voice and projection are great! The bad news is that it will not improve with playing, the good news is, it is less likely to be affected by moisture etc. The more I play it, the more I like the rich tones. This is probably a function of the large body and internal braceing. I'm not really an expert, but a friend who is says it compares favorably with his $1,500 Taylor.

  Durability

Holds tune, needs very little adjusting, ready for live gigs. The moustache bridge is very large and solid so it should hold for a very long time, the craftsmanship is very good. It as all natural so there is no coloration to hide flaws. While shopping I tried an EJ200 with a black finish and it sounded dead, and who knows what's under that black paint. The laminate top is less likely to crack or be affected by mosture.

I know I'm supposed to be critical, but I love my Epi EJ200. The playability and tone blow me away for a guitar that sells for under $500. After 3 months of playing it, I love it more each time I pick it up.
